Roots Before Reproach: The Case for Parenting, Education, and Media Literacy

These days I have found myself scrolling my insta feeds little more than I usually do and found that it has become another platform for highlighting and targeting mistakes or loopholes of other individuals and organizations without actually getting to the root cause of it. Whether it is a case of school teacher teaching wrong spellings and pronunciation in a government school or public taking the charge of beating a person with a wrong doing. Recently a case of the renowned Jaya Bachaan ji, speaking derogatory about paps in an interview with Barkha Dutt who actually are the part of social media networks.

We somehow feel like savior and preacher of the everything that is good, ideal or ethical and punishing or ill-treating the people irrespective of judging our own actions. We as a public, representing the nation has become so judgmental that we prefer to teach the morals and ethics to anyone right away if we see other violating social norms.

Year 2025 has been a year of losses, devastation and mishappenings already but these recent cases of eve teasing, violence, fraud and suicide on individual levels is changing and weakening the dynamics of our so called religious and cultural land. On one side we are talking about technological advancements, hi-tech infrastructures and digitalization but on the other hand we are weakening the social and moral ethics of our nation. India has one of the youngest populations of youth but on the same side we have made the youth so fragile and vulnerable that they are incapable of fighting the difficult situation coming their way. Every coin is two side; therefore, it will be wrong to blame one side of the struggle. The fact of the matter is, it is all about convenience. People prefer to take sides that justify their side of the story.

It is important to study and know the root cause of the situations. The foundations have to be strong. Why is nobody talking about the foundations or the moral and ethical grounds of the individuals. Why is no body talking about parenting and how important it is to have smooth family ambiance for a strong, ethical and moral upbringing. Because it is easy to blame people and escape from one’s own responsibilities. What has ignited this mindset, is social media platform that are a cause of magnifying the issues from individual to a social platform that is exaggerated by the like-minded people.

Even in our earlier form of education, the focus was laid towards making a ethical human being than a great professional but today we are focusing so much on commercialization and digitalization that we have forgot to teach about human values. By being a consumer of today’s media stories, I feel that lives of human beings have no values and they are dying either through natural calamities, suicides, accidents or murders and back stabbing. Therefore, it is important to make our foundations strong as an individual or as human beings and teach our children the same. We as a nation should pay more attention towards building a strong and responsible citizen and make such programs that enhance their moral and ethical standards and not just focusing on making them productive machines.
